Safety cameras

The World Health Organisation says road accidents will be the third biggest cause of death and injury worldwide by 2020.

What can we do about it?

Research shows that accidents can decrease by 28% - and casualties by as much as 47% - if safety cameras are used. There are tight national rules governing where they can be sited.

1. They can only be placed on roads with a bad accident record and problems with high speeds.
2. There must have been a set number of serious casualties there in the previous three years.
3. Cameras have to be clearly visible for 60 or 100 metres depending on the speed limit.
4. Signs must indicate that cameras are being used in the area.
5. The sites must be subject to regular reviews.

We are all road users and are all at risk from speeding vehicles. Find out where the safety cameras are located around Shropshire by visiting the website using the link on this page. Also see the DirectGov link on this page to find out more about safety camera guidelines and advice.

The Casualty Reduction Partnership in West Mercia

The partnership's Safety Camera Unit started work in April 2003.

Cutting vehicle speeds will play an important part in improving everyone's quality of life, their health and general well-being. Our new partnership includes the highways authorities who design and maintain our roads and the Local Education Authorities who teach the up-and-coming generations about citizenship. The Police are also involved as they deal with the consequences of accidents as well as enforcing the law and the courts who administer it, along with the NHS.

The success of this programme depends upon us all. We are all road users and are all at risk from speeding vehicles.

The full cost of the work will be paid by the speed offenders. The agencies involved in the partnership will not receive any direct financial benefit.

Agencies involved:

  • Telford & Wrekin Council.
  • Herefordshire Council.
  • Highways Agency.
  • Shropshire Council.
  • West Mercia Constabulary.
  • West Mercia Magistrates, Courts Service.
  • Worcestershire County Council.
  • The six NHS Primary Care Trusts in West Mercia.
  • Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service.
