Shropshire's roads surveyed

As part of Shropshire Council’s routine highway survey programme, a scanner survey (Surface Condition Assessment of the National NEtwork of Roads) of the A, B and C roads in Shropshire has been carried out over the last few weeks.

A scanner vehicle takes thousands of measurements using a line of lasers to scan the road surface in order to build a detailed picture of its condition.

The survey is carried out at speeds of up to 60mph and requires no engineers to be on the road. This improves safety and causes no delays to road users.

This data is processed so that the state of the Shropshire’s roads can be viewed as a whole. Using this information, maintenance work around the county is prioritised, helping to ensure that investment is targeted where it is most needed.

David Roberts, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for local environment and economy, said: “These surveys are essential in deciding what roads are in need of repair and how they should be prioritised to make the most efficient use of our highways budget, whilst ensuring that Shropshire’s roads remain in a safe condition.”

Shropshire Council encourages people to report any potholes or problems they see on the council’s roads by phoning the Environmental Maintenance teams on 0345 678 9006 or alternatively reporting a problem on-line.
