Shropshire County Council is responsible for and maintains over 15,600 street lights, over 2,000 illuminated signs and more than 120 traffic signal sites (which include puffins, toucans, pelicans, school crossings and cattle crossings).

We are committed to maintaining all street lighting, illuminated signs and traffic signals, so that they operate safely and effectively, providing a safe environment for all road users and ensuring good value for money.

Nearly £800,000 is spent annually on the maintenance of lighting, illuminated signs and traffic signals, with almost half the cost being for energy.

Street light not working?

Lights which are not working can be reported to us in a number of ways:

  • online
  • on the free-phone fault reporting line – 0800 0286046
  • at any of the Divisional Offices (follow the link to 'contact us' on this page)

Street lighting maintenance in Shropshire
As part of the maintenance of street lighting, a number of operations are carried out to ensure that at least 99% of lighting is working correctly at any given time of operation. This is achieved by:

  • Night patrols which are carried out monthly all year round to record lights that are not working at all, or not working properly.
  • All lamps changed every four years.
  • All lanterns cleaned every two years.
  • Ensuring that any dangerous accidental or vandal damage, particularly exposed wires and open/detached doors are attended to immediately.
  • Attend and repair most faults within three working days of fault being reported.
