Your guide to pavement permits

From 1 April 2011, Shropshire traders will be able to apply to Shropshire Council for a new pavement permit which will allow them to place tables or chairs on pavement or display items for sale.

The permit is for businesses that use the pavement for their trade. This includes tables and chairs for cafes and bars, as well as shelving or storage for displaying goods. If you are unsure whether a permit is needed for how you use the pavement please see the FAQs below or contact our Customer Service Centre on 0345 678 9006.

How to apply

The permit costs £50 per year and can be obtained by completing the online pavement permit application and payment form attached to this page.

Alternatively if you wish to pay by cheque please download and complete the pavement permit application PDF.

There is no charge for permits for non-profit making organisations such as charity shops or voluntary groups.

FAQs and checklist

Do we need insurance cover?

We do ask for public liability insurance cover for £5 million.

What is defined as a pavement or footway

The pavement (or footway) is a thoroughfare for pedestrians, normally kerbed and separated from the carriageway. This also includes pedestrian zones. A minimum available width for pedestrians of 1.2 metres on footpaths and 4.0 metres on pedestrian areas must be maintained.

My equipment is not next to the road - do I still need to make an application?

The pavement is part of the highway which extends from the centre of the road to your property boundary. Any equipment in this area needs a permit.

Is there any limit to the amount of pavement I can use?

The pavement used needs to be proportional to your premises and not restrict the footway in any way.

Am I allowed to serve alcohol?

Please check the restrictions on your premises licence.

Is planning permission required?

Planning permission may be required for a change of use of a pavement for the siting of chairs and tables.

Do I need to re-apply after the first year?

We will send you a request for the annual fee prior to the renewal date.

Do we need to clean up the pavement by our premises?

You will need to clean up any litter which is a direct result of your business. It may be best to provide a bin for your customers which you empty regularly.

I will only use the pavement for my business in the summer months - do I still need to apply?

The permit is for the use of the pavement at any time during the year. We do not discount the £50 annual fee as the administration will be the same whether it is all year or part of a year.
