Shropshire Council

Labour market

Economic activity rates are high in Shropshire at more than 79% of the working age population (Annual Population Survey, year ending June 2023). There were 147,400 Shropshire residents in employment in this year, including 26,800 self-employed people. The number who are economically active and in employment has fallen due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Professional occupations accounts for the largest share of those in employment (24%), with associate professional and technical, managers, directors and senior officials, elementary occupations, admin and secretarial and skilled trades all also accounting for more than one in ten workers who live in Shropshire.

There are more people in Shropshire who work than there are jobs. This means that more people travel out of Shropshire for work than travel in. Despite this, more than 70% of our jobs are filled by Shropshire residents.
