Natural History Drawing and Painting

Tutor: Angela Gladwell M Art Royal College of Art
The tutor Angela Gladwell has worked in a range of institutes including: The Barber Art Institute, University of Birmingham, Birmingham City Museum & Art Gallery and Ludlow Museum Resource Centre. Also she has worked in both the pubic and private collections including The Natural History Museum London and has exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.

Venue - At Ludlow Museum Resource Centre

When - 9 week course, morning and an afternoon class.

Every Monday for 9 weeks starting on Monday 11th January 2010

A2 sheet of watercolour paper
Cartirage paper
Pencils (Fs and Bs-2Bs)
Watercolours

Cost - 10:00am-12:30pm £95 per term
2:00pm-4:00pm £ 76 per term

Colourful Creatures from the Cardiff Collections

The course will make use of spectacular specimens loaned by the National Museum of Wales. These will include Toucans, iridescent Himalayan Monals, Pangolins and Armadillos.

The first term will be spent making 2 or 3 complete studies from different specimens to give to students the chance to enjoy such different birds and animals properly. This will take the form of the drawing and painting. The second term will be mostly spent making a complete comparision, making use of particular chosen specimen and putting it into a setting of each students choice.



















African Inspirations for Art and Textile Projects

Tutor : Bobby Britnell
Bobby is a professional textile artist and teacher with many years of experience at primary, secondary, advanced and degree level. Her own work has been exhibited all over the country and abroad. She now has her own studio where she works and runs a variety of creative workshops.

Venue - At Ludlow Museum Resource Centre

When - 10.00am – 4.00pm each day

Cost: £40 per workshop to include all materials, tea and coffee

Three individual day workshops, each one exploring a different aspect of African textiles and artefacts, with the aim of creating a sketchbook full of creative ideas for future projects.

Tuesday 2 March 2010
Build and develop ideas onto painted papers using inspirations from African raffia cloth, ladles and baskets. These ideas will be translated onto fabric using a variety of printing techniques.

Tuesday 16 March 2010
Explore ways in which geometric designs can be created for patchwork and other projects, taking inspiration from the woven geometric striped cloths and other artefacts.

Tuesday 30 March 2010
Experiment with resist techniques onto paper and fabric to create exciting patterns and designs. This workshop will be looking at the resist dyed raffia cloths from Zaire.





Youruba Ikat Felt Workshop

Tutor: Marietta Alker
Marietta teaches sculpture, papermaking, knitting and weaving. She is passionate about all things textile and is a designer maker member of the Shropshire Guild of Contemporary Craft specialising in feltmaking.

Venue: At Ludlow Museum Resource Centre

When: Tuesday 23 March 2010 10.00am – 4.00pm

Cost: £40 to include all materials, tea and coffee

African textiles are not normally made with felt, but on this workshop you will translate the stripes of the Yoruba tribe’s Ikat woven textiles and the geometric barkcloth patterns of Central Africa onto handmade felt to make a small wallhanging or cushion panel.







African Art & Textiles

Tutor: Jill Salmons BA MA

Venue: At Ludlow Museum Resource Centre

When: Friday 19 March & Friday 26 March 2010 10.00am – 12.30pm

Cost: £20 to include refreshments

Art in Africa has always fulfilled a multitude of roles- as a symbol of status and prestige, to commemorate the dead, as a stimulus to farming and trading, as a method of defining gender, as a way of uniting a community, as a medium for communicating with the ancestors and the spirit world, or purely for entertainment. Utilising artefacts, this two week introductory course will look at a variety of West African cultures in order to appreciate the vibrancy and diversity of African art in its social context. Particular emphasis will be placed on African textiles and costume.







An Introduction to Indigo Dying

Tutor: Janet Bradley
Janet is a resident interpreter at Acton Scott and also a social history tutor with Shropshire Museum Service. She has many years experience in the art of natural dyeing and her knowledge of plants and the history behind them is extensive.

Venue: At Ludlow Museum Resource Centre

When:Tuesday 9 March 20102.00pm – 4.00pm

Cost: £10 to include refreshments

A demonstration and exploration of the magic of the dye bath and the mythology, ritual and relevance surrounding the classic colour Indigo blue. There will be an opportunity to handle examples from the museum textile collections.




Once More we go……. Off the Beaten Track in 2010

Tutor - Bob Milner
Bob Milner is a local landscape historian who enjoys delving into the stories, rumour and scandal behind the great (and small) events and people of the past. Bob is well known for discovering the quirky bits of history nobody ever told you.

Venue - At Ludlow Museum Resource Centre

When:Every Wednesday 10.00am – 12.00pm for 8 weeks commencing Wednesday 27 January 2010.

Cost:£80 including minibus travel.

Off the Beaten Track - an inspiring course that looks at forgotten historical sites across South Shropshire.
Spend the first four weeks at Ludlow Museum Resource Centre discovering more about the history of South Shropshire through richly illustrated talks and access to unique material from the museum collections. Then the last four weeks out and about by minibus visiting:

Acton Scott, Ticklerton, Alcaston & Lower Dinchope

The Ashfords, Middlleton, Little Hereford & Bleathwood

Lower Ledwyche, Caynham, Greete, Whitton & Snitton

Round Cold Weston, Clee St Margaret, Cockshutford, Blackford & Clee Stanton















Family History for Beginners

Tutor: Janet Bradley
Janet Bradley has extensive experience as a social history interpreter and tutor with Shropshire Museum Service. She has run several Family History courses that have inspired participants to find out more about the lives and loves of their ancestors. These courses come with a warning – tracing your family history can become addictive!

Venue- At Ludlow Mueum Resource Centre

When: Every Friday afternoon, 2.00pm – 4.00pm for six weeks commencing Friday 26 February 2010. The visit to Acton Scott Historic Working Farm takes place on Wednesday 31 March 2010.

Cost: £57 to include refreshments and entry to Acton Scott Historic Working Farm.

Everything you need to know to start your family tree

Take a journey into the past and put your family history into context. A relaxed informal exploration of different resources and techniques with lots of tips to get you started. The final session will be held at Acton Scott Historic Working Farm to take a look at Victorian rural life. The course is intended for beginners.

By the end of the course you will be able to do the following

Interpret family resources, reminisces and documents and use them to start your tree.

Investigate the history of surnames.

Use key dates and establish research techniques to search Birth, Marriage and Death records and census returns.

Use internet sites to further your research.

Use family history/local record office/library/ museum resources.

Draw up a simple family tree.
