Library charges
Most library services are completely free of charge.
It costs nothing to borrow books provided you return them on time. You can also use computers without charge and have free access to the online reference library.
This page gives information on charges for:
- hire of audio and video
- requests

Hire charges
Audio items
Compact discs cost 95p (standard) and £1.40 (premium) per one week loan
Talking Books and Language courses are loaned for 3 weeks and cost £1.25 (up to two tapes) and £2.00 for compact discs and larger tape packs
Children’s Talking Books may be borrowed free of charge but if they are kept overdue fines will be charged at the normal children’s book rate.
Videos and DVDs
Items may be borrowed for one week
Videos cost £1.25 for single tapes or £2.00 where there is more than one tape in a set
DVDs cost £1.75 for Standard titles and £2.50 for Premium titles
Requests
If an item is not immediately available you may request it for 35p per item or set. There is no charge for young people under the age of 19. An additional charge of £2.65 will be made for items, including periodical articles, that have to be obtained from other library authorities through the inter-lending scheme.
Fax
Transmitting :£1 per A4 sheet, including the cost of the call within the UK to standard fixed telephones.
For international calls, mobile phones and specialised numbers the cost of the call will be added.
Messages received :50p per 10 sheets.
Items returned overdue
There are no charges for borrowing books provided that they are returned by the date due. Fines are charged on each item kept overdue:
Adult books at 14p per service day
Children’s books may be returned up to two weeks late without penalty, thereafter the charge is 2p per service day.
Other items incur a fine equivalent to the hire fee/period overdue.
the maximum fine is £5.00 per book, £10.00 for other items.
An administration charge of £1.00 will also be made for final reminder letters.
Items can be renewed up to three times if not requested, but if already overdue they will be subject to fines to the date of renewal, plus any further hire fees. If you lose any item whilst it is on loan you will be expected to pay the current retail cost plus an administrative charge.
Computer printing and removable media
There is no charge for use of computers in libraries. They can be used to access the Internet, send and receive e-mails, word processing and use of other software and CD ROMs.
Printing costs 10p per A4 sheet, black and white; colour costs 20p per sheet.
Recordable CDs are 75p each and DVDs are £1.25 each (where writers are provided).
Music and drama sets
There is no charge for the loan of sets from stock. The following charges apply to sets obtained from other library authorities:
Vocal score sets, 50p per copy
Drama sets, 50p per copy
Orchestral sets, £9.00 per set
Sets returned overdue:
14p per set, or part of set, per service day. Maximum fine £5.00 per set
An administrative charge of £1.00 will also be a made for all letters sent as reminders.
Remember, sets can be issued until two weeks after the performance.
