Home Library Service

Information available at the library

Did you know that Shropshire Libraries can deliver to your door? The Home Library Service is available if you cannot visit the library because you are disabled, frail or have a long term illness, or if you are the main carer of a disabled person. A volunteer will bring you books or talking books; music and DVDs are available too. If you do not have a relative, neighbour or friend who can be your volunteer, the library service will do all they can to find a volunteer for you.

How much does it cost?

The service is free and you will be given a concessionary library card which also means that you can borrow books and most other items free of charge. What is more there is no charge for requesting the titles that you would like to listen to, read or watch.

How do I join?

If you are already a member of the library you just need to complete a Home Library Service application form, or ask someone to do it for you. This asks what kind of books you read and what you like to listen to, so that your volunteer can bring things you will enjoy. If you do not have a library membership card you also need to complete a library membership application form. Both of these can be downloaded and printed from this website. Alternatively, please ring your local library or contact them by e-mail and you will be sent the relevant forms.

Volunteers wanted for the Home Library Service

Are you someone who enjoys reading and meeting people? As a volunteer you would be delivering books, compact discs, videos, DVDs and talking books to people in their own homes. You will need to be able to carry books (which can be heavy) and other items. You will work closely with library staff who will be there to help in any way to make your job easier and enjoyable. The number of people who you visit will be arranged to suit the amount of time you want to commit

You will be asked for the names and addresses of two people who are willing to give you a reference, and there will be a police check (council regulations for all staff and volunteers). You will be given an identification card with a passport sized photograph for security of yourself and the people you visit.

Training will be provided, including the Manual Handling of Loads (a council requirement for staff and volunteers). Out of pocket expenses, including a mileage allowance if you are using your own car, will be paid. In this case, your car insurance should include cover for voluntary work and you will be asked to check with your company and provide us with written confirmation from them.
