Can't get to the library?
If you cannot visit the library because you are disabled, have a long term illness, are frail or a full time carer of a disabled adult or child, the library service can be delivered to your door. A volunteer will bring you books, on tape or in large print if you prefer, music and videos or DVDs, including sub-titled and audio described videos. If you do not have a relative, neighbour or friend who can be your volunteer, the Library Service will do all they can to find a volunteer for you.
How much does it cost?
The service is free and you will be given a Concessionary library card which also means that you can borrow books, talking books and most videos, DVDs and CDs free of charge. You can also request the titles that you want free of charge.
How do I join?
If you are already a member of the library you just need to complete a Home Library Service application form, or ask someone to do it for you. If you do not have a library membership card you also need to complete a Library membership application form. Both of these can be downloaded and printed from this website. Alternatively, please ring your local library or contact them by e-mail and you will be sent the relevant forms.
Volunteers wanted for the Home Library Service
Are you someone who enjoys reading and meeting people? As a volunteer you would be delivering books, compact discs, videos, DVDs and talking books to people in their own homes. You will need to be able to carry books (which can be heavy) and other items. You will work closely with library staff who will be there to help in any way to make your job easier and enjoyable. The number of people who you visit will be arranged to suit the amount of time you want to commit
You will be asked for the names and addresses of two people who are prepared to give you a reference and a police check (County Council regulations for all staff and volunteers) will be made. You will be given an identification card with a passport sized photograph for security of yourself and the people you visit.
Training will be provided and this will include Manual Handling of Loads (a County Council requirement for staff and volunteers). Out of pocket expenses, including a mileage allowance if you are using your own car, will be paid. In this case, your car insurance should include cover for voluntary work and you will be asked to check with your company and provide us with written confirmation from them.
If you would like to volunteer for the Home Library Service you may download and print a leaflet containing a form from this website. Alternatively, please contact your local library or e-mail equalaccess.library@shropshire-cc.gov.uk.
