The School Library Service Mobile Library is for Primary and Special Schools in the area covered by Shropshire Council and Telford and Wrekin Council. It has:
- stories and information books for leisure reading
- picture story books for all ages
- books for reluctant readers
- dual-language books
- books on tape and in large print
- 3000 books on board.
The mobile library
- is restocked daily from the large collection of resources at the Shirehall, Shrewsbury
- provides an opportunity to extend the range of books in the classroom and helps to advance wider reading
- gives children, who otherwise may not visit a library, the opportunity to choose books for themselves.
The following notes should prove useful for teachers to get the most out of a visit.
Before the visit
- plan a timetable with all staff - it is much easier to choose books if the mobile is not crowded and each class visits separately
- talk to the children about how to choose books - genres, favourite authors, etc.
- phone the School Library Service in advance if you have any special requests for your visit and staff will do their best to carry the stock you would like
- gather together all books from your last visit so that you can exchange your full allocation
During the visit
- do bring children onto the mobile with you. Usually eight to ten children is acceptable at one time. It is preferable that a teacher stays with each class if possible
- please ask for help if you need it. The Senior Library Assistant knows the stock and will help you and the children to choose books they will enjoy
- talk to the children about their choice and encourage them to choose books suitable for others in their class as well as themselves
Other options
You can also
- order your topic collection for next term or return collections. Topic resource materials are available from the School Library Service at the Shirehall - you can order in advance or come in to choose them yourself
- find out about other services on offer such as Artefacts, Storysacks, videos, DVDs and Big Books.
Books borrowed during your visit may also be exchanged at the School Library Service at any time during the year.
Special arrangements are possible so that the mobile library can be used as a focus for library skills sessions or to link with BookQuest, Book Week or other reading promotions.
You will be notified when your visit is due but please let staff know if there are particular days which suit you best. You are very welcome to visit the School Library Service to look around and borrow from the extensive stock.
Please see leaflet attached to page giving a summary of the service provided by the School Library Service Mobile Library.
