Reading groups - frequently asked questions

Q: What are the advantages of belonging to a reading group?

A: You can meet new people, share your enjoyment of books and reading with other keen readers, and broaden your reading horizons all at the same time. Word of mouth is the best recommendation when looking for a good read, and this is what most people find is the biggest benefit to being in a group.

Q: How many people might there be in a group and how often do they meet?

A: Generally reading groups meet monthly and number between 10 and 12 which is enough to guarantee a good mix of people.

Q: Where do the books come from?

A: Some groups buy their own. Otherwise, Shropshire Libraries has a substantial reading group collection with sets of 15 copies of selected paperback titles which can be requested and borrowed free of charge. The complete list of titles is available online. The library also welcomes suggestions for new titles to add to the collection.

Q: How are the books borrowed?

A: A nominated member must enrol on behalf of the group and be responsible for the safe return of all sets loaned. There is no charge to borrow a reading group set, and the loan period is calculated to accommodate monthly meetings.

Q: How can I enrol on behalf of my group?

A: Simply ask for a reading group ticket at your local library. A member of staff may either enter details directly on to the library computer system, or you may be asked to complete a simple form. You will also be asked to provide some proof of where you live. Once the details have been recorded, you will be issued with a membership ticket on behalf of your reading group. Please bring your ticket with you each time you collect a set of books for your group.

Q: Who decides what to read?

A: The group itself. If the library doesn’t have enough copies you can suggest new titles to add to the collection.

Q: Are books available in large print?

A: Whenever possible, large print and talking book titles will be made available.
