Computer use in libraries

At community libraries throughout Shropshire there are resources that go beyond just books. There are Open Learning packages and other multimedia facilities for you to use to learn at your own pace. Try the electronic versions of reference books and encyclopaedias. Log onto the Internet and access the world wide web, to find current information, to send E-mail messages, to download files or just to browse.

All these services are free of charge, but if you use public access computers in Shropshire libraries you must abide by the Acceptable Use Policy, as detailed below. This should be read in conjunction with Library Bye-laws.

Your responsibilities as a computer user
The library computers are available for library members and visitors to access the World Wide Web and e-mail facilities, produce office documents and use learning packages. Young people under the age of 16 should have the consent of a parent or carer to use the Internet. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
You must not add, alter or delete any settings or programs on library computers. This includes home pages, history, Internet browser, desktop or wallpaper. You must not damage the computer hardware.
When sending e-mails you should use online Web-based e-mail services.
Whilst staff will attempt to rectify technical problems as soon as possible, Shropshire County Council is not responsible for any hardware or software failure, or for any data lost as a result of any such problem.

Please treat staff and customers with courtesy and respect the privacy of others.

You may only log-on using your own personal Library membership number and PIN. Do not allow others, including members of your family, to use your details.

Booking
You are advised to book computer time in advance. Please have your library membership card or number available. Booking can be made in person, by phone, fax or e-mail up to 14 days in advance. The maximum booking is 2 hours per day or less during busy periods.
If you are more than ten minutes late for your session the staff may release the computer booking to someone else.

Facilities Available
Printing facilities are available but please respect copyright laws. You are responsible for the pages you print and all pages must be paid for.
You may save, copy and download onto removable media only e.g. memory sticks and CD or DVD (as available). Do not save to the hard drive as this may be viewed by other users and all saved files are automatically deleted at the end of every session. Recordable CDs and DVDs can be purchased in the library.
Some libraries operate Wi-Fi Hotspots, for more details follow the link from this page.

Acceptable use
Library computers (including the Internet) should be used for information, recreation and educational purposes only. You must not use the Internet and e-mail for deliberately searching, sending or receiving any material which is offensive, abusive, indecent, obscene, sexist, racist, or menacing, or in breach of confidence, copyright, privacy or any other rights. The filter system restricts access to websites that are inappropriate and/or offensive. If you transmit personal or private information, credit card or bank details, the County Council takes no responsibility for any consequences.

Due to licensing restrictions you must not view simultaneous (live) TV broadcasts.

If you are observed accessing or sending inappropriate material, the staff will ask you to stop. If you repeat the offence computer access will be immediately withdrawn for a specified period. Library staff carry out routine checks that the Internet has been used appropriately.
Your may not use the computers if you have incurred a specified level of fines on overdue library items.
