Performing animals registration

The registration of performing animals falls under the Performing Animals (Regulation) Act 1925.

It is an offence for anyone to train or exhibit a performing animal unless they are registered to do so. The act is designed to cover the use of animals in stage performances, at circuses and as part of exhibitions, among other circumstances.

Am I eligible to apply for a performing animals registration?

You must not have been previously convicted under any of the following acts: The Protection of Animals Act 1911, The Protection of Animals (Scotland) Act 1912, The Protection of Animals (Cruelty to Dogs) (Scotland) Act 1934, The Protection of Animals (Amendment) Act 1954, or any offence under any of Sections 4,5,6(1) and (2), 7 to 9 and 11 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

What is it for?

The Performing Animals (Regulation) Act 1925 requires any person who exhibits or trains any performing (vertebrate) animal to be registered with a local authority. The term "exhibit" is defined as "exhibit at any entertainment to which the public are admitted, whether on payment of money or otherwise…"and to "train" means "for the purpose of any such exhibition". This act does not apply to the training or exhibition of animals for genuine military, police, agricultural or sporting purposes.

Who needs one?

Anyone who exhibits or trains any performing (vertebrate) animal.

How much will it cost?

There is a fee for issuing this document, which is taken when you apply.

Do I need to do anything else?

This is a one-off registration and remains valid until: there is a change of name and or address of the registered trainer or exhibitor, there is a change in the address where the animals are normally kept, there is an alteration in the number or type of animal, there is an alteration in the type of exhibition or performance, or the registered person gives notice to us that they would like their name removed from the register.
