Books and Journals - recommended reading
If you are interested in finding out more about interpretation, you can't go wrong by picking up any of the following books. All of these books will soon be available through the Shropshire Library Service.
Ham S 'Environmental Interpretation, a practical guide for people with big ideas and small budgets'(1992) Golden Colorado: North American Press.
Sam Ham's explanation on themeing interpretation is at the heart of what it is all about. There are some great tips for producing media from a simple leaflet to a full blown interactive exhibition!
Tilden, F Interpreting our Heritage (3rd Ed.1997) Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press.
Freeman Tilden is probably the most quoted interpreter ever. Although he was writing in the 1950s he really had his finger on the pulse and remains inspirational.
Regnier, K, Gross, M, and Zimmerman, R 'The Interpreter's Guidebook; Techniques for programmes and presentations' in the 'Interpreter's Handbook' series (1992) Stevens Point, Wisconsin: UW-SP Foundation Press.
The interpreters handbook series are excellent introductions to interpretation, written by professional enthusiasts for the layperson.
Ionides, J & Howell, P et al. Another eyesight - Multi-sensory Design in Context - a fascinating and highly informative book on designing fully accessible interpretation media by the Dog Rose Trust.
Here are 2 journal publications that are also well worth dipping into.
Interpretation published by the Association for Heritage Interpretation (AHI) is an excellent twice yearly publication. Its available to members of the AHI but articles are regularly published on the AHI's website.
Interpret Scotland this is a FREE publication available by registering with Interpret Scotland.
