Prehistoric collection

The earliest evidence of people living in this area dates from around 10,000 years ago. These people were gatherers and hunters who travelled to make the most of seasonal sources of food.

Around 6,500 years ago these people started to become more settled and cleared patches of woodland to build homes and set out fields.

By the time people started to use bronze to make tools and weapons, these communities were building the stone circles and hilllforts which can still be seen in the landscape today.

This Prehistoric past is illustrated in our collection by a range of stone tools, pottery fragments and metal tools and weapons. Items include:

  • Jackfield Iron Age sword

Recent acquisitions inlcude the Perry Bracelet (a Bronze Age gold bracelet found in north Shropshire) and the Telford Torc (An Iron Age necklace found in east Shropshire).
