Collections can only benefit present and future users if professional standards of care are applied to ensure their long term survival. Conservation work is part of everything we do. It takes the form of both prevention and cure.
Prevention
Prevention ensures that artefacts and specimens are stored and displayed, where possible, in the most appropriate conditions to limit deterioration caused by light, humidity, insect pests or even incorrect handling.
Cure
The conservation cure is applied when new objects are donated to the museums in need of attention or as a result of collections surveys which identify at-risk specimens.
The County Museum Service has its own Conservation Laboratory and facilities at the Ludlow Library and Museum Resource Centre. To find out more about everyday risks to our collections and conservation work, follow the link entitled 'Did you know?'
