Applying for funding

SRB SPARKS

Shropshire Partnership has secured £3.2 million of Regional Development Agency Funding (Single Regeneration Budget, Round 6) for the SPARKS initiative. This supports a wide range of community based learning projects in disadvantaged areas of Shrewsbury, Highley and Oswestry. The initiative started in November 2000 and is due to finish in 2006.

The LSP support team manages the delivery and monitors the performance of the initiative on behalf of partners.

RURAL REGENERATION ZONE

Shropshire Partnership has contributed to the development and launch of the Rural Regeneration Zone (RRZ) in February 2001. This is a 12-year programme supported by Advantage West Midlands (AWM) and worth more than £6-8 million per annum. Regeneration Zones are a means of targeting regeneration resources on the areas of greatest need in the West Midlands and improving linkages between need and opportunity.

The RRZ is one of six Zones in the West Midlands and covers the rural areas of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. During the first year of operation the Partnership helped partners to secure £1.6m of Rural Regeneration Zone funding in Shropshire. Outline plans for Zone funding for 2004/05 are now being drawn up.

The Rural Regeneration Zone team is based at Ludlow in Shropshire.

    OBJECTIVE 2 and OBJECTIVE 3

Shropshire and Herefordshire Partnerships successfully lobbied regionally and nationally to secure Objective 2 area status for the rural areas of the counties. Objective 2 is a European fund designed to redress regional imbalances in Europe by supporting development in areas with structural problems. Objective 2 investment in Shropshire is potentially worth up to £40 million until 2006. Shropshire secured the approval of 3 strategic packages in Oswestry, South Shropshire and Shrewsbury, which concentrated Objective 2 funding on areas of deprivation.

The Partnership has contributed to the development of the Switch On Shropshire bid worth 4.8m in total and the Shropshire Action Plan programme. This programme supports the tourism, creative industries and community regeneration sectors through Objective 2 and Rural Regeneration Zone Funding and the package is worth £12 million.

Objective 3 is a European fund designed to redress skills issues on a regional basis. It aims to compliment Objective 2 Infrastructure and Business and Sector Development. The Shropshire Learning and Skills Council takes the lead on coordinating bids for Objective 2 and liaises with the Partnership on strategic skills issues.
