Public Speaking at Committee
Public speaking at meetings of the Shropshire Council is not a legal requirement. However, the practice is now widespread and regarded as good practice, so long as it is properly regulated. Public speaking is an additional and supplementary part of the process for deciding a range of applications.
The purpose of allowing the public and applicants to address the planning committees is to allow both applicants and potential supporters or objectors from the public to give their views to the committee in person, before a decision is made. In addition, town and parish councils can send a representative to speak at the committee, and the local ward councillor or nominee may also speak.
You do not have to speak at committee if you made a representation to an application, as all written representations will be reported to the committee. In most cases, people are content for the committee to decide applications on the basis of these written representations.
The council's policy relating to public speaking is attached to this page together with a public speaking request form, which can also be downloaded
