On very rare occasions it becomes necessary to rename or renumber a street. This is only done as a last resort in cases where there is confusion over a street name, a group of residents are unhappy with their street name or new properties are built in a street and there is a need to renumber to accommodate the new properties.
This will only be done when there is no alternative, and existing residents will be contacted and their views taken into account.
Having identified a street naming issue we will
- Contact the local Councillor and the local Parish Council to obtain their views.
- Consult the Royal Mail to find out their views on the problem.
- Ballot the local residents.
The ballot will require at least a two-thirds majority in favour.
This is a very time consuming process, but if you feel there are valid reasons for making the change, please contact us with the details.
Changes of this nature require the residents affected to make changes to all their contact details i.e. domestic bills, notifying DVLC etc. Costs of seeking the advice from a Solicitor regarding changes to the property deeds would also need to be taken into account.
Section 18 Public Health Act 1925 empowers local authorities to rename a street. Notice is posted on site and an aggrieved person may appeal to the courts.
