Hours of employment for children 13 and 14 years of age

No child may work before 7am or after 7pm on any day (including school holidays). These hours are clearly defined in the regulations and cannot be varied.

At 13 and 14 years of age a child can work on:

School Days:

  • maximum 12 hours per week (including weekends)
  • not more than a total of 2 hours in any one day during the following periods

In the morning between 7am and 8am delivering newspapers
For not more than 1 hour in light agricultural or horticultural work for a parent or guardian
In the evening a maximum of 2 hours between 4pm and 7pm. Providing this does not interfere with any school commitments

Saturdays:
5 hours a day between 7am and 7pm
6 hours a day between 7am and 7pm in light agricultural or horticultural work
Not more than 4 hours without a rest break of 1 hour

Sundays:
2 hours only between 7am and 7pm

School Holidays (excluding Sundays):
5 hours a day, between 7am and 7pm
Not more than 25 hours in any week when not attending school
Not more than 4 hours in any day without a rest break of 1 hour
At least two consecutive weeks without employment
