Copy Certificates

lady holding a certificate

Do you need to order copies of birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificates?

If you, or the person whose details you require, were either born, married or died in Shropshire you can apply to us for a copy certificate.

If this is not the case, you will need to contact the relevant register office. To do this visit the General Register Office website for England and Wales via the link at the bottom of this page, and then type the town or postcode into the search facility on the site.

Fee's and Services

Gold - Priority service (UK only)

£7.00 statutory fee for each certificate (unless a short certificate, or under 1 month) +
£25.00 (per item) expedited service charge and special delivery by 9.00am next day = £32.00

For persons who need a certificate urgently. Same working day collection, or next day delivery if application received by 1.00pm. Certificate packages will be tracked by Royal Mail and will need to be signed for at the point of delivery. Packages will be insured against loss in transit. Please note that the £32.00 fee is the same whether certificates are posted out or collected in person.

Silver - Premium service

£7.00 statutory fee for each certificate (unless a short certificate, or under 1 month) +
£5.50 recorded delivery, inclusive of insurance (this fee covers up to 4 certificates in a single transaction) = £12.50

This service offers greater peace of mind. Applications will be processed within 3 working days for live certificates and 5 working days for historical certificates. Certificate packages will be tracked by Royal Mail and will need to be signed for at the point of delivery. Packages will be insured against loss in transit up to the value of £34.00.

Bronze - Standard service

£7.00 statutory fee for each certificate (unless a short certificate, or under 1 month)

Applications will be processed within 3 working days for live certificates and 5 working days for historical certificates. Certificates sent by 2nd class post. Please note that no liability will be accepted by Shropshire Registration Service for non-delivered items.

It costs £5.50 for a short copy of a birth certificate. Short copies of birth certificates are not suitable in all application processes, such as passports, and it may be more appropriate to order a full (standard) copy.

How to apply for copy certificates

To make an application for copy certificates you can:

  • Telephone 0345 678 9016 (Customer Service Centre).
  • Complete the on-line form.
  • Print and complete the download form attached to this page, and post it to us (see contact information below).

If you use the online application form, please note the 5 digit reference number (or merchant's cart ID) in case you have to contact us about your payment. If you are applying for more than one certificate do not bookmark the form - open a new version of the form for each application. If you have applied online and have any queries about your transaction, please contact the Certificate Production Unit on 0345 678 9016 (via Customer Service Centre).

If you decide to print the download document and post it to us, you will need to include a cheque as payment for the copy certificates, otherwise we will not be able to process your application. Cheques should be made payable to Shropshire Council

Data Protection Statement

We will use the data you provide for the sole purpose of this application. Your personal details will be retained for a maximum of three years and will not be passed to other parties or used for any other purposes.
