Road safety in Shropshire

The Road Safety Team promotes road safety through education, training and publicity. Here you will find information about the following by using the links on this page:

• Road safety education from pre-school to further education - Road Safety Officers offer free advice, publications and are happy to come and visit your school.
• Child pedestrian training through the Stepping Out initiative - training can be arranged with our coordinator.
• Our Cycle Training Team and Volunteer Scheme - in 2007/08, 910 children were trained by our professional instructors, and 168 children trained by our volunteers.
• Driver training via the National Driver Improvement Scheme, Motorcycle Safety, Advanced Driving and the Driver Assessment Scheme.
• What we do to make your roads safer through campaigns and School Crossing Patrols.

Fact...

On Shropshire roads during 2007:

• The number of fatal and serious road accident casualties was 173; 13 of these were children
• The number of slight road accident casualties was 1096; 96 of these were children

As a Road Safety Team, we want these figures to be lower so we work alongside other Shropshire County Council sections and external organisations to improve the safety of our roads. This brief list below highlights who does what and links to the sections can be found on this page. If you have a maintenance issue or would like to report concerns over a particular road, please contact the relevant department.

• Safer Routes to School - the programme works interactively with students/teachers to identify hazards and remove them, wherever possible, through capital works.
• Traffic Management - speed limits, new engineering measures and road signs.
• Divisional Highways - road sign maintenance, street light maintenance, hedge cutting.
• Safety Camera Partnership - safety camera enforcement.
