National Driver Improvement Scheme

Road safety NDIS course

The National Driver Improvement course is designed to correct poor driving behaviour, often arising from errors of judgement. It combines the latest thinking on defensive driving techniques with modern training methods and includes both theory and practical instruction. The course aims to reduce the likelihood of drivers being involved in further blameworthy incidents.

Drivers are offered a National Driver Improvement course as an alternative to prosecution only for driving without due care. Fees vary between £140 and £225. Shropshire County Council currently charges £155 and following satisfactory completion clients are advised by the police that no further action will be taken.

The National Driver Improvement course operates through 43 police forces with service providers located throughout England and Wales. The course takes place over one and a half days and on behalf of West Mercia Constabulary. Shropshire County Council’s Road Safety Section use specially trained, approved driving instructors.

Over 5000 drivers have completed courses in Shropshire and have benefited from updating their driving skills.

West Mercia Constabulary issues a course information leaflet. Any driver wishing to attend a course in Shropshire who is referred by another police force can contact us to request a leaflet.
