Infant and junior schools
Our Road Safety Officer contacts all schools in the county at the beginning of each school term. The officer will also will visit schools and talk to classes when requested as presentations are particularly relevant when linked with curriculum work.
Each year we issue a pack for parents and carers of reception children which is full of road safety advice. Year 6 pupils receive a copy of The Highway Code for Young Road Users (Arrive Alive). Resources covering general pedestrian safety, in car safety and cycling can be loaned to schools. For a list of available resources, please contact the Road Safety section or download the list from the link on this page.
Pictured above are The Walking Forward Theatre Company and some pupils from the Grange Junior School at a recent performance of Cat Ninelives in Deepest Trubble. Theatre in education forms part of our developing programme of bringing road safety education into schools and colleges.
Nurseries and playgroups
Road safety can be incorporated easily and successfully into the early years foundation principles. Themes such as 'people who help us' and 'journeys' lend themselves naturally to the 'Keeping Safe' theme. A Road Safety Officer can visit the group to talk to the children and parents/carers if requested. We can also provide a range of resources which can be loaned freely to continue with the road safety theme. Prepared nursery 'loanboxes' consist of resources for all children and can be delivered to nurseries when needed, free of charge.
Equipment such as miniature zebra crossings and displays are also available. Information for parents/carers is also available in leaflet form on general road safety, seat belt safety and the dangers of speeding. For the children themselves, we reinforce the 'holding hands' message and leave them relevant colouring sheets/stickers. Two useful books we issue are 'Stepping Out Together' and 'Road Safety Through Play' these cover all road safety topics for the under five's.
Road safety education is also an integral part of the School Travel Plan and links to this can be found on this page. For information, please contact Caroline House in the Road Safety section.
