Bikeability in Shropshire

Shropshire County Council cycle training team

Bikeability is the all new cycling training scheme for the 21st Century which aims to get more people cycling, more safely, more often. Many adults will remember doing their Cycling Proficiency Test, well Bikeability is designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads.

Cycling is healthy and fun but it's necessary to learn how to do it safely. Thousands of children will now have the chance to get their Bikeability award as part of a national scheme that is being rolled out across the country. Shropshire County Council is an accredited provider of the scheme and is working towards the aim of providing every child in Shropshire with the opportunity to reach Bikeability level 2 by the time they leave year 6.

What courses are on offer?

There are three Bikeability levels:

  • Level one: This concentrates on bike handling skills and takes place off the road in a safe environment such as a school playground. It takes two to four hours and is usually taught as the first session of a level two course. By the end of the course children should be able to demonstrate the skills and understanding to make a trip and undertake activities in a motor-free environment.
  • Level two: This takes place on quiet public roads usually close to a school and concentrates on on-road skills. It takes eight to 10 hours and is aimed mainly at year six pupils. By the end of the course children should be able to make simple road trips such as the journey to and from school on bicycle.
  • Level three: This is not currently offered by Shropshire County Council although we welcome enquiries for pilot schemes. It is aimed mainly at secondary school pupils and involves some one to one instruction. It concentrates on busier, more difficult roads such as roundabouts and dual carriageways. By the end of the course all trainees should be able to discover the full range of their cycling potential.

Who does the instructing?

The training is delivered by a team of three directly-employed professional cycle instructors who visit schools to carry it out. The team is equipped with both transport and equipment to meet the demands of the school’s location and conditions. Trainees are expected to provide their own roadworthy bikes and helmets, but the team carry spares bikes in case the trainee’s bikes fail safety checks. Level three courses are not yet offered but instructors have been trained to deliver them and will be running experimental pilot courses in secondary schools later in 2008.

How much does it cost?

We charge £15 per pupil for a joint level one and two course. The charge for level one only is £7. Children who receive free school meals are not charged. The actual cost of providing a place is a little under £40, so places are subsidised.

How can I apply for a course for my child/school?

If you are a parent, ask your child’s Headteacher when the next course is. If you are a headteacher or a school administrator and need to arrange a course please contact Dave Rolfe, Cycle Training Co-ordinator by the details on this page.
