Practical child pedestrian training
To support our established primary school presentations and talks, the Road Safety Team are now able to offer practical child pedestrian training at the roadside. Research has shown that this greatly increases children’s awareness on deciding how and where to cross the road safely.
The ‘Stepping Out’ training scheme was developed and piloted in Staffordshire and has now been operating in Shropshire since 2006, receiving very positive feedback from schools, parents and pupils.
This scheme of work has been developed to help children between the ages of seven and nine (years 3/4) develop basic pedestrian skills. This is the age when many children are beginning to travel independently and it is vitally important that they have the skills necessary to keep themselves safe near traffic.
Training is available to the majority of primary schools throughout Shropshire (subject to scheduling) and consists of classroom based activities and worksheets with practical sessions at the roadside, which are organised and supported by the road safety team.
In addition to the Stepping Out scheme, we can offer resources and training on all aspects of pedestrian training, whatever the age group. If you would like to know more about the scheme then please contact Marian Hesketh, Child Pedestrian Training Co-ordinator or visit the website links on this page.
