HEALiSS - Healthy Eating Active Living in Shropshire Schools

The HEALiSS Group was formed in November 2003 to respond to the issues raised in the project proposal “Reducing and Preventing Obesity in Shropshire County”. The focus of the group to be predominantly schools and school age children.

Membership of the group involves:-

  • Shropshire Primary Care Trust.
  • Shropshire School Meals Service.
  • Children and Young People’s Directorate.
  • Shropshire Health Improvement Service.
  • The Family Food Project.
  • Schools for Health Team.
  • Sustainability Team.
  • Early Years and Child Care.

The main focus of the group is to look at a coordinated and joined up approach to raise awareness of diet, health and exercise in schools.

Projects such as:

  • improving the quality of the school meals service
  • promoting a whole approach to healthier food provision in schools
  • promoting food related activities such as cookery clubs to parents and children
  • encouraging healthier breakfast clubs – and healthy tuck shops in schools
  • promoting the development of school growing clubs
  • facilitating farm visits
  • encouraging healthier packed lunches
  • increasing awareness in children and parents of the importance of good diet and exercise
