Our food policy
The Shropshire School Meals Service is committed to sourcing raw materials for its products. To ensure our service fulfils an effective environmental ethos, we are carrying out a number of initiatives to reduce the impact of the service on the environment.
Our raw materials aim to be
- high quality
- conforming to government guidelines
- local wherever possible
- environmentally sensitive
In addition, as our catering and cleaning service purchases more than £5,000,000 in raw materials and employs around 1,500 people, we are looking at ways to improve economic development in the county wherever possible.
We are currently working with a county-wide group to find ways to introduce more local produce into our meals.
The group comprises:
- Shropshire School Meals Service
- Shropshire Council Sustainability Unit
- The NFU - National Farmers' Union
- Advantage West Midlands
- DEFRA - Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
- Heart of England Fine Foods
- Regional Farmers' Markets
- The Soil Association
