Our food policy
The Shropshire School Meals Service is committed to sourcing raw materials for its products that are:
- high quality
- conform to government guidelines
- local wherever possible
- environmentally sensitive
To ensure our service maintains an effective environmental ethos we are carrying out a number of initiatives to reduce the impact of the service on the environment.
In addition, as our catering and cleaning service purchases more than £5,000,000 in raw materials and employs around 1,500 people, we are looking at ways that could improve the economic development within the county wherever possible.
We are currently working with a county-wide group to find ways to introduce more local produce into our meals.
The group is made up from:
- Shropshire School Meals Service
- Shropshire Council Sustainability Unit
- The NFU
- Shropshire Rural Hub
- Advantage West Midlands
- DEFRA
- Heart of England Fine Foods
- Ruralscapes
- Regional Farmers' Markets
- The Soil Association
