Elective home education

Section 7 of the Education Act 1996 states that:

The parent/carer of every child of compulsory school age shall cause him/her to receive efficient, full time education suitable to his/her age, aptitude and ability and to any special educational needs he/she may have either by regular attendance at school or otherwise.

Elective home education is where parents or guardians decide to provide education for their children at home instead of sending them to school.  It is not home tuition provided by the local authority or where the local authority provides education otherwise than at a school.

When parents inform the local authority that they are home educating their child or remove them from a school to educate them at home, they are added to the register of children who are being home educated.

The local authority is required to ensure that children receive education appropriate to their needs and ability; this can be delivered in a number of ways.
