Catering jobs

British Themed Catering Staff Picture

We recruit for a range of different catering roles from kitchen assistants to catering managers. Please read on for more information on the various roles available.

Catering manager

Employed to work in secondary schools and colleges, the role includes the
management of a team of staff to produce a high quality, tariff-based menu for students aged between 11 and 18. A catering manager ensures that financial targets are achieved and all mandatory training, monitoring, and health and safety regulations are adhered to.

Assistant cook

This role assists the catering manager with the day to day management of the catering team, as well as being involved with skilled cooking activities, menu planning and food ordering.

Cook in charge

Employed to work in primary schools, the role involves responsibility for a team of kitchen staff who prepare and serve high quality food for pupils aged 5-11. Menu planning, portion control, food ordering, hygiene control, health and safety, fire regulations and security are all duties associated with the post.

Kitchen assistant

Kitchen assistant posts are found in every site operated by Shire Services including primary and secondary schools, coffee shops and restaurants. Key tasks include preparation and serving of food using basic cooking skills, and washing up and cleaning duties in the kitchen and dining areas.

Dining assistant

This role is concerned with serving meals in schools that don't have kitchens. As meals are delivered from a school nearby, tasks would include setting up, serving meals, clearing away tables, chairs and serving points, cleaning and washing up. Some dining assistant posts require travel from the kitchen to the dining centre so car use would be needed in these cases.

Relief and casual posts

Relief staff are employed in each of the roles set out above, usually in permanent posts. They would be expected to travel within a certain radius of their home to cover low staffing levels in different locations. Casual staff are employed to work on a temporary basis, often at seasonal times of the year and usually close to their home location.

For all of our positions, candidates are expected to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (the old CRB). Checking of references and an occupational health questionnaire are also carried out as part of our recruitment process.
