Justices of the Peace (Magistrates)

The justice system relies heavily on volunteers - Justices of the Peace (Magistrates) - who deal with over 95% of criminal cases.
Magistrates are members of the local community, appointed by the Lord Chancellor. No formal qualifications are required but they should broadly reflect the community in terms of gender, ethnic origin, geographical spread, occupation and age. Magistrates receive training throughout their service.
Magistrates are unpaid but may receive travel allowances. Generally, only people aged 18-65 are eligible to apply. The retirement age is 70.
The following will NOT be appointed as magistrates:
- Anyone who is not of good character and personal standing.
- Undischarged bankrupts.
- Members of the Armed Forces.
- Police officers, traffic wardens or any other occupation which might be seen to conflict with the role of a magistrate.
- A close relative of a magistrate on the same bench.
- Anyone who, because of a disability, cannot carry out all the duties of a magistrate.
