Justices of the Peace (Magistrates)

the Mere Ellesmere

The justice system relies heavily on volunteers - Justices of the Peace (Magistrates) - who deal with over 95% of criminal cases.

Magistrates are members of the local community, appointed by the Lord Chancellor. No formal qualifications are required but they should broadly reflect the community in terms of gender, ethnic origin, geographical spread, occupation and age. Magistrates receive training throughout their service.

Magistrates are unpaid but may receive travel allowances. Generally, only people aged 18-65 are eligible to apply. The retirement age is 70.

The following will NOT be appointed as magistrates:

  • Anyone who is not of good character and personal standing.
  • Undischarged bankrupts.
  • Members of the Armed Forces.
  • Police officers, traffic wardens or any other occupation which might be seen to conflict with the role of a magistrate.
  • A close relative of a magistrate on the same bench.
  • Anyone who, because of a disability, cannot carry out all the duties of a magistrate.

For application forms and information contact the local Advisory Committee on +44 (0)1743 252724 or telephone the helpline for potential magistrates: 0845 606 1666.

If you would like an application form please follow the Applying to become a magistrate link to the direct.gov.uk website. The form is available to be downloaded and filled in by hand, or completed online. Alternatively, you can contact us and we will send you an application pack.
