School Library Service

The Shropshire School Library Service offers a comprehensive resource and advisory service to all phases of education (pre-school to post-16) within the area covered by Shropshire Council and the Telford and Wrekin Council as a partnership arrangement.

Staff have long experience of working with schools and can offer professional, friendly advice and practical support on all aspects of library and resource provision. Subscription to the service ensures a cost-effective, responsive and flexible service which will help to enhance literacy and independent learning across the curriculum.

Resources

With over 400,000 items in stock the School Library Service offers schools a wide, constantly changing choice of books and other resources. For every £100 invested at least £800 worth of resources and service can be accessed from the School Library Service. Here are some of the resources that are available to subscribing schools:

• Museum in a Box
• Big Books
• group reading sets
• videos and DVDs
• extensive art collection

Advice and support

A good school library can have a real impact on learning and teaching. The School Library Service can help to make your library a vibrant, inspirational and enjoyable place where children and young people become independent learners and readers. Use School Library Service consultancy for:

• advice on library refurbishment, resources and policy development
• assessment of stock and advice on book purchase
• pre- and post-OFSTED work
• library and skills training for pupils/students
• effective provision for able, gifted and talented pupils
• training of school library staff and pupil librarians
• professional guidance on library staff recruitment, job descriptions, salaries and professional development.

Location and opening hours

The School Library Service is located in the Annexe, Shirehall, Shrewsbury. Please note that there is a designated parking area for teachers by the entrance to the School Library Service.

Opening hours are:
Monday and Wednesday 9 to 5
Tuesday and Thursday 9 to 6 (School holidays 9 to 5)
Friday 9 to 4
