Welcome to the new Shropshire Council
Shropshire Council replaced the district and borough councils and the county council from 1 April.
Shropshire Council will make it easier for people to understand who is providing services across the county, as well as aiming to improve efficiency and value for money.
Staff and councillors from all six previous councils have been working hard over the past couple of years to make sure the transition to a new unitary council went as smoothly as possible. Shropshire County Council, Bridgnorth District Council, South Shropshire District Council, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, Oswestry Borough Council and North Shropshire District Council have merged to form Shropshire Council.
Councillor Malcolm Pate, Chairman of the Implementation Executive, which is the group of councillors overseeing the move to the new council, said he was excited about the future.
“The dawn of Shropshire Council is the culmination of a huge amount of work by staff and councillors from all of the councils, and I am delighted we are finally here.” Councillor Pate said, “I would like to thank all the leaders of the political groups at Shropshire County Council, the leaders of the district and borough councils and all of the staff for their support and co-operation in delivering the new unitary council.
“The move to one council has already saved about £11 million and extra investment is being ploughed into services that people really care about, such as cleaning streets, on top of a zero per cent council tax rise.
“I am confident the council will meet the challenges ahead and work in the best interests of Shropshire people both at a regional and local level. We are committed to providing services locally, and people will have greater access to their council than ever before.”
Sheila Healy, Interim Chief Executive of Shropshire Council, added: “The move to a single unitary council has always been based on increased efficiency, better services and greater influence for people at a local level. It is important that we embrace those ideas from day one and work to provide the best possible services for the people of Shropshire.”
Shropshire Council will now be responsible for all the services that the county council, district and borough councils used to deliver. That includes planning, licensing, bin collections, schools, libraries and roads.
The headquarter offices of the former councils are all being used by the new council, and receptions will be open to the public as normal. There are also dozens of customer service points, ‘Telly Talk’ sites which provide a video link to a customer adviser, and Broadplaces which provide free access to the council’s website, across the county.
