Pupils at Broseley C.E. Primary School are celebrating the opening of a brand new path to school.
They designated this week as ‘Walk to School Week’ and joined local councillors to launch the new route at 10.30am on Wednesday 11 June.
The new path, which crosses the Birch Meadow Park, links Cockshutt Lane to existing paths at the rear of the school. It was funded by Shropshire County Council as part of its Safer Routes to School programme, in partnership with Bridgnorth District Council and Broseley Primary School. The path was designed by civil engineers at Mouchel and was constructed by Enterprise, who completed work on the path last week.
The new path will link well with other projects including new ramps (replacing steps) on the school site. As well as promoting Walk to School Week, the school will now be encouraging even more pupils to walk, cycle and ‘park-and-stride’ to school.
Alison Kennedy, Shropshire County Council’s transport planner, said: “This path will hopefully encourage more people to leave their cars at home, providing pupils with a safe and healthy way to get to school.”
A School Travel Plan was adopted in 2006 and this identified opportunities for improving paths around the school and raised a number of safety concerns regarding Dark Lane. In 2007, Shropshire County Council installed amber flashing warning lights on Dark Lane. The council has recently introduced advisory 20mph speed limit signs on Dark Lane, which incorporate artwork by pupils at Broseley Primary School.
