Tributes paid to former county councillor
Tributes have been paid to a former Shropshire county councillor who has died at the age of 93.
Norman Pickering served as a Labour party councillor for the Wrockwardine Wood division from 1985 to 1993. During his time as a councillor he served as vice-chairman of the council’s leisure services committee and was a member of many other committees, including the planning and transport committee, and the public transport, highways, and policy and resources sub-commitees.
In addition to his council work, Norman Pickering was a member of the Pentabus Theatre Company Advisory Board, Telford Community Council, West Midlands Arts and Oakengates Leisure Centre Joint Use Management Committee.
Brian Gillow, Chairman of Shropshire County Council, said: “I was saddened to hear of the death of Norman Pickering who was a hard-working, dedicated and respected member of the county council for many years. On behalf of the council I would like to pass my condolences to his family and friends.”
Councillor Alan Mosley, Leader of Shropshire County Council’s Labour group, said: “Norman was a dedicated councillor who enthusiasticly represented the Labour party and his constituents in the council chamber, through many other bodies and directly within the Wrockwardine Wood community.”
Norman Pickering passed away at home on Monday 22 July. His funeral will be held on 3 August, when the county flag at Shirehall will be flown at half-mast.
