Balloons go up for Worfield Walk to School

Press release - 13 June 2007

Over 100 children and parents at Worfield CE Primary School took part in a mass walk to school event held earlier this month to celebrate the first year of the school’s walking bus.

The children, armed with red balloons, were accompanied by parent volunteers on their walk to school in a bid to raise awareness of the successful scheme.

The walking bus parents also provided a welcome walker’s breakfast on their arrival at the school playing field, and both children and parents enjoyed a fun treasure hunt on their route.

The walking bus, established with help from Shropshire County Council, aims to encourage more pupils and parents to walk to school.

Jo Powell, Worfield School’s walking bus coordinator, said: “This was a great event which gave lots of children and their parents who are not part of the scheme, the chance to join our walking bus for the day. We are hopeful that some who have to travel by car but who can’t access a school bus might now wish to take part”.

Ray Hughes, Shropshire County Council’s school travel plan co-ordinator, added: “This proved to be a very successful event and my thanks go to everyone involved.

“The event fully supported the school’s work on environmental issues and provided evidence towards their bid for the coveted Eco School Green Flag Award."

Worfield Primary School has recently won £500 from the DfT for promotion of their walk to school initiatives and this will help provide further incentives for children to join the walking bus and other walk to school initiatives.
