Shropshire County Council is celebrating the announcement that Sustrans’ Connect2 is the winner of The Peoples £50 Million Big Lottery Fund.

Shrewsbury’s ‘Severnside Gap’ project will now benefit from £500,000 of this lottery funding. This will be used to help provide quality walking and cycling routes through the town centre and the northern suburbs.

When complete, the routes will benefit thousands of people, providing safer routes to school, work, shopping and leisure activities. Work will start right away to develop the detailed scheme, and all construction will be completed within the next five years.

John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “This is fantastic news. We are really delighted at the result and would like to thank everyone who voted for Connect 2. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has made this possible. It is a great Christmas present for the town.

“We simply couldn’t have done it without you and your votes.”

The County Council will now begin the process of working with the Big Lottery Fund to establish the timetable for funding.
