Thomas Telford unveiling at Shropshire Archives

Press release - 10 July 2007

A unique artwork inspired by the achievements of Thomas Telford, the great engineer who was born 250 years ago this summer, will be unveiled at Shropshire County Council’s Shropshire Archives on Monday 9 July. The painting has been created by a group based at Observer House at Shropshire Mind, which supports adults with mental health issues.

Using a photograph of Buildwas bridge, which was rebuilt by Telford in iron in 1796, 9 members of the group each painted a 12 inch square. These canvas squares have now been brought together to create the finished work.

Barbara Craig, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: "I am delighted that this project has shown how archives can be used to inspire such creative work, and I am very grateful for all the dedicated work from the artists who have contributed to it."

Suzanne Squire, Observer House Coordinator, said: "The people of Observer House have very much enjoyed working with Shropshire Archives on this project and producing this colourful art work."

Mary McKenzie, County Archivist, said: "This year we are celebrating the life of Thomas Telford through a wide range of events and activities. It is great to have a permanent reminder of his achievements in our building."

Anyone wishing to see the art work can visit Shropshire Archives, Castle Gates, Shrewsbury during their opening hours as follows: Closed Sundays and Mondays. Open Tuesday 10am-9pm, Wednesday 10am-5pm, Thursday 10am-1pm, Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-4pm.
