Oteley Road closures for future matches

Press release - 21 September 2007

The B4380 Oteley Road in Shrewsbury will be temporarily closed for the Shrewsbury Town Football Club fixtures at the new football stadium during September and October 2007.

The road closures are needed to make it safer for fans walking to and from New Meadow Football Stadium.

The road will be closed between the junction with the stadium access and the entry slip road which leads to Meole Brace golf course, from 15 minutes before the end of a match, until 45 minutes after a match.

Future fixtures for Shrewsbury Town include games against Rochdale, Peterborough United, Chesterfield and Mansfield Town.

Vehicles visiting or leaving the stadium, or homes and businesses on Oteley Road, will be able to do so, but must join the road from the Weeping Cross island. Access to the golf club and health centre will be maintained from Meole Brace Roundabout.

For all other traffic, a signed diversion route will be provided between A5112 Hereford Road, A5 between Dobbies Roundabout and A458 slip road, A458 to Weeping Cross Roundabout and vice versa.

For each fixture, temporary parking restrictions will also be in place in the residential streets surrounding the stadium from two hours before the start of a match until one hour after the match has started. This measure is being taken to ensure that local residents are able to park outside their homes.

Cones will be placed along these streets to show that parking is prohibited. ParkRight attendants will be enforcing the restrictions, which will not apply to residents.

Hugh Dannatt, Shropshire County Council’s group manager for traffic strategy, said: “The recent closure of Oteley Road and the introduction of temporary parking restrictions in neighbouring streets was very much welcomed by both fans and local residents. The road closure will again be in place to allow fans to safely leave the stadium by foot at the end of the match.

“We are currently liaising with the club to find a more permanent solution for pedestrian safety and residents concerns.”
