Safety improvements at Weston Rhyn Primary School

Shropshire County Council has funded the installation of a new school warning system to improve safety for children getting to and from Weston Rhyn Primary School, near Oswestry.

The new warning system, installed on Station Road, includes school warning signs and amber flashing lights to make traffic more aware of pupils and parents on the school route.

The lights will be activated automatically at the start and end of the school day, and can also be activated at other times by school staff when pupils need to get to and from the school’s playing field.

The new signs and lights will improve the safety of children crossing the road and will also contribute towards increased driver awareness of school pupils within the vicinity of the school.

The school completed a School Travel Plan in 2004 and has used some of its School Travel Plan grant to contribute towards funding these improvements.

Mr Hines, Weston Rhyn Primary School’s headteacher, said: “The school has waited for this day for many years and finally with the support of the Transport Planning and Extended Schools teams, we have a new safer crossing to the school field”.

Ray Hughes, Shropshire County Council’s senior school travel plan advisor, added: “We have been working closely with the school to encourage more pupils, parents and staff to walk to school. These safety measures will hopefully get more people out of their cars and also increase safety for pupils when using the playing field.”
