Shropshire County Council’s eight week scheme to enhance several streets in the centre of Shrewsbury is now nearing completion.

The majority of the work to improve the pavements, pedestrian crossings and access for buses has now been completed and is on schedule to finish by 31 May 2008.

To complete this enhancement scheme, work will need to be carried out to resurface these streets. This work will take place over three weekends, the first of which will be this weekend (17 and 18 May) as part of the existing scheme.

For these works to be carried out safely, Castle Gates and Castle Street will need to be closed from 7pm on Saturday evening through to Sunday, when it will be opened as soon as the work is completed. The road will remain open up until 7pm on Saturday to avoid peak travel times and minimise disruption.

Access onto St Mary’s Street and Dogpole for residents, businesses and shoppers during these works will be via Fish Street off High Street, vehicles can then exit via Dogpole.

The following weekends, 31 May and 1 June and 7 and 8 June, work will again take place on Saturday evenings from 7pm through to Sunday.

John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “It will become self evident that substantial improvements have been made to the pavements and we hope that these will provide a far more pedestrian friendly area.

“We understand that the work has caused disruption, but right from the start we have been keen to complete this vast scheme as soon as possible. By utilising the extra weekends and non peak hours to resurface the roads we can open St Mary’s Street and Dogpole in the shortest possible time.”
