Press release - 28 August 2007
Clun Bridge will be closed for up to seven days from Monday 10 September so that essential repair work can be carried out.
The bridge, which carries the A488 road between Shrewsbury and Knighton across the River Clun, was damaged by a vehicle on 6 August 2007. A sizeable length of the bridge’s eastern parapet will now need to be taken down and rebuilt.
Unfortunately, as the bridge is narrow, it will be necessary for safety reasons to close it to traffic in order to carry out the work.
Access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained across the bridge at all times.
When the bridge is closed, through traffic will be diverted along the B4385 and A4113 roads via Little Brampton and Leintwardine.
John Williams, Shropshire County Council’s principal bridge engineer, said: “It is appreciated that the bridge closure will cause inconvenience and disruption and we will do all that we reasonably can to reopen the road to traffic as soon as possible. The diversion signing will include signs to advertise that Clun remains open for business as usual despite the closure”.
The county council will be seeking to reclaim the cost of the repairs from the insurers of the person responsible for the damage.
