Tributes have been paid to a former Shropshire County Councillor who has passed away at the age of 69.

Jim Hicks served as councillor for Hollinswood from 1989 to 1993, and was a member of several county council committees, including leisure services, economic development and education.

He was also a member of West Mercia Police Authority and Telford ITEC.

Brian Gillow, Chairman of Shropshire County Council, and a fellow member of the police authority, said: “I was saddened to hear about the death of Jim Hicks who was a hard-working and respected member of Shropshire County Council. On behalf of the council I would like to pass on my condolences to his family and friends.”

Councillor Gillow will represent the county council at Jim Hicks’ funeral, which will be held on Thursday 20 September at All Saints' Church, Stirchley. On this day the flag at Shirehall will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.
