This month (January 2008) seven young people from across the county will be asking for the votes of the fellow young people of Shropshire, in a bid to become a Member of the Youth Parliament (MYP). The new MYPs elected will be representing young people locally, regionally and nationally for the next twelve months.
Over the next three weeks Shropshire County Council’s youth bus will be travelling across the county visiting schools and colleges encouraging young people to vote for their MYP. Youth workers will also be taking groups of young people to the bus, giving them an opportunity to have their vote.
Young people are also being asked to vote on the top three issues that are important to them; these will form the MYPs 2008 manifesto, which they will be actively working over the next 12 months to bring about positive changes for young people.
Councillor June Drummond, Shropshire County Council's Young People’s Champion said: “I really encourage all young people to vote in this election and get involved. We really need to know young people’s views and opinions to make sure that we are making the right decisions."
Lorraine Warrender MYP support worker said: "It is important for us to include as many young people in Shropshire in the voting as possible; we want the election and the manifesto to be truly representative of what Shropshire's young people want."
