Press release - 11 September 2007

Residents of Cleobury Mortimer have shown overwhelming support for a town centre enhancement scheme, set to include a new zebra crossing.

Residents were asked to give feedback in August on proposals for a street enhancement scheme which included proposals for new footway paving, improved street furniture, better signage, and a new zebra crossing for the town. The consultation also gave residents a choice of where the crossing facility should be located.

Both locations for the crossing proved to be well supported; but slightly more people preferred the location near to the bookshop in the town.

John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s Cabinet member for environment, said: “The level of response from the people of Cleobury Mortimer was very good. The community have made a very clear statement that would like this enhancement scheme to go ahead.

“The crossing location has strong support and will hopefully bring a number of benefits to the town.”

The Cleobury Mortimer Parish Council voted last week to support the proposed Street Enhancement Scheme in its entirety and accept the will of the parishioners on the location of the pedestrian crossing.

The council is now seeking a response on the proposal from members of Cleobury Country Ltd. on 19 September before making a final decision on the way forward.

It is expected that the works will be able to start in early 2008.
