Council getting ready to host BikeFest

Shropshire County Council is getting ready to host the Shrewsbury BikeFest, as part of the national Bike Week 2008 celebrations.

BikeFest will take place on Saturday 7 June at Shrewsbury Sports Village from 10am until 4pm and promises to be even bigger and better than last year’s successful event.

The day will include a number of fun activities for all the family such as cycle skills sessions, rickshaw rides, face painting and the opportunity to try out different bikes on the cycle track or make a smoothie on the “Blenda-Venda”.

There are also guided rides to suit all ages and abilities: a “pedalling picnic” for families with small children, a wildlife-themed ride, a ride especially for women and a longer ride from Wellington along National Cycle Route 81.

BikeFest is just one of the events taking place across Shropshire to mark the UK’s annual celebration of cycling.

John Everall, Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “I would encourage all cyclists, whether young or old, experienced or novices, to have fun, get fit and feel free. BikeFest will be offering plenty of help and inspiration.”

Also in the run-up to Bike Week, the Shropshire Cycle Forum will take place on Wednesday 11 June from 7 until 9pm at Shirehall in Shrewsbury, when Diane Davidson from Wrexham and Shropshire Railway Company will be talking about cycling and trains. The forum is open to anyone in Shropshire or Telford and Wrekin with an interest in cycling.
