Oteley Road to be closed for pre-season friendlies

The B4380 Oteley Road in Shrewsbury will be temporarily closed for Shrewsbury Town Football Club's pre-season fixtures on 22 July and 2 August 2008.

Shropshire County Council is undertaking works to widen the footpath on the bridge near the stadium. Once completed these works will connect with footpaths around the stadium, and will allow supporters to walk safely to matches without the need for a road closure.

During this closure access to the golf club and health centre will be maintained from Meole Brace Roundabout.

People visiting the garden centres and nursery on Oteley Road will be able to do so by joining the road from Weeping Cross Roundabout, which will remain open to traffic at all times.

Shrewsbury Town will play West Bromwich Albion on 22 July at 7.45pm and will play against Stoke City on 2 August at 3pm.

The road will be closed between the junction with the stadium access and the entry slip road which leads to Meole Brace golf course, for approximately one hour after the match.

A signed diversion route will be provided between A5112 Hereford Road, A5 between the A5/A49 Roundabout and A458 slip road, A458 to Weeping Cross Roundabout and vice versa.

John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s Cabinet member for economy and environment, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this closure will cause, however these works will ensure that future road closures will not be necessary when the football season starts.”

Liz Parsons, Shropshire County Councillor for Sutton and Reabrook, said: "The continued road closure is far from ideal, but pedestrian safety has to be the County Council's priority. I look forward to the completion of the improved pedestrian access over the bridge and a return to normal use of Oteley Road on match days."
