Financial help for Shropshire residents on the increase

More residents are now able to manage their own finances when it comes to purchasing care services, according to a report submitted to the Community Services Scrutiny panel on Tuesday 11 March.

The report highlights a 65% increase in the uptake in direct payments since 2005, to residents who use services including: adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, older people and mental health.

A direct payment is a sum of money paid to an individual by the local authority for them to arrange and manage their own care, which could include paying for a personal assistant or live-in carer or equipment to meet the individual’s care needs.

Shropshire County Council adult social care managers have been working closely with the Penderels Trust on improving the processes and procedures which include running awareness sessions for older people at community centres and training sessions for members of staff to help assist members of the public who qualify for Direct Payments.

Councillor Peter Corston, Chairman of the Community Services Scrutiny Panel said. “Partnership working has been a key factor in improving our processes and procedures. With the support of the Penderels Trust, more of our residents are now enjoying the greater choice, safety and savings Direct Payment brings.”

John Malcolm, Team Leader and Independent Living Advisor for the Pederels Trust Shropshire said “The Penderels Trust aims to provide and support Independence and choice for service users and help our most vulnerable residents get the financial support and choice they are entitled to.” You can contact Penderels Trust for further information on 01743 450923.
