Press release - 12 June 2007
A progressive and enthusiastic partnership between Shropshire County Council and Bridgnorth District Council has reaped huge benefits for local young people. The newly formed committee for Broseley and Barrow has spoken to local children and young people about their ideas and has pledged £8,000 to make them a reality.
At the committee's recent meeting they were informed about how much is already going on in the area. After presentations from the Guides and Brownies they decided they should do more and have now set up a fund called the Broseley and Barrow Opportunity Fund which will provide small grants for activities. The forms are simple and are designed so that children and young people can fill them in themselves.
The idea came from a proposal made by Abi McCarthy who lives locally and is one of Shropshire’s members of the National Youth Parliament.
Abi said: "I think the best people to decide what children and young people want is us."
A panel has been set up to allocate the grants and it includes representatives from young people. Applications are invited form anyone who is a resident in the parishes of Broseley and Barrow. Forms are available form Shropshire County Council Youth Service, 01743 254488, both electronically and by post. The deadline for returning applications is Friday 6 July at 12 noon.
