Press release - 12 September 2007
Shropshire County Council and Morda Primary School in Oswestry are inviting local people to have their say on a proposed scheme to encourage more walking and cycling to school and improve safety on the school journey.
This scheme forms part of the ‘Safer Routes to School’ programme and includes proposals to construct a new zebra crossing and introduce traffic calming measures along the school route.
Proposals also include a 20mph speed limit, ‘gateway measures’ at points where the speed limit changes and a drop-off area with new pavement near the school. There are also four options to reduce speeds at the crossroads of Morda Bank, Trefonen Road and Weston Road.
Morda Primary School adopted a School Travel Plan in 2005 and a key issue that was highlighted in the plan was the need for safety improvements for people travelling to and from the school.
As a result of these concerns the County Council and their engineering consultants at Mouchel Parkman have put together this proposal to reduce the speed of traffic, making the journey to school safer.
The council is now seeking the views of local people before deciding whether to progress these further.
John Everall, Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “Putting these proposals into place very much depends upon local support and we hope that people will get involved and have their say.
“Consultation is the best way to ensure that future developments meet Shropshire’s needs, and we welcome all suggestions and comments.”
Full colour copies of the drawings can be viewed at Oswestry Library, Morda Post Office and Stores and Morda Village Hall or by following the link on this page.
