Press release - 12 June 2007

Shropshire County Council is getting ready to celebrate the environmental achievements of school pupils across the county as part of the Mike Sprackling School Awards 2007, early next week (Monday 18 June).

This bi-annual award, created in memory of County Council officer Mike Sprackling, recognises the achievements of many school communities in Shropshire to improve their school environment and engage pupils with the environment.

This year, Greenfield’s Primary School in Shrewsbury is to receive this award for its innovative school grounds work.

Winning the award, the school will receive a cheque for £1000 to help it further develop its environmental work together with an engraved shield it will retain for 12 months.

Joint second prize will be awarded to both Worfield Endowed School and St John the Baptist Primary School. Third prize is set to go to Welshampton Primary School.

The day will also congratulate schools which have been highly commended for their environmental initiatives. These schools are Baschurch CE School, St George’s CE School, Clun, Crowmoor Primary School and St Lucia’s Primary.

John Everall, Cabinet member for sustainability, said: “These school communities are models for the future who not only are aware of the need to act and live sustainably, but through their actions are making positive changes to their school environments.

“Through their efforts, young people have ensured their schools are more stimulating places to learn and act as beacons in the community, demonstrating what can be done with enthusiasm.”

Mr Andrew Morris, Headteacher at Greenfield’s Primary School, said: “I am thrilled that the work on our school grounds has been recognised; it reflects the hard work that the children have put into creating a stimulating environment, and the invaluable support the school has from staff and parents.”

A separate award will also be given for the school caretaker or cleaner who has made the greatest contribution to helping their school improve its environment. This year there are two winners - Mr Robert Leeke, premises manager at Greenfields Primary School and Mrs Maggie Pugh, Cleaner at St Lucia’s Primary School.

Both of these members of staff have helped their schools in ensuring waste is reduced and recycled wherever possible working towards reductions in energy and water use.
